The Catechists play an important role in the life and activity of our local Church. These men are recruited from the local people. Monday, June 10, 2019 was a memorable day as the Catechists working in the Dicoese of Jalandhar gathered in Gianodaya: Diocesan Pastoral Center at 09:00 am to welcome the New Director of the Board of Catechists-Rev. Fr. Simon Kalladayil. Rt. Rev. Dr. Agnelo Gracias, the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Jalandhar thanked Rev. Fr. John Grewal for all his service in the past years as the Director of the Board of Catechists. Bishop wished the new Director Rev. Fr. Simon wholehearted support and best wishes. There are 224 catechists at present in the diocese. In this there are 120 full time Catechists. Then there are 78 Trainee catechists. Retried catechists are 24 and 2 part time catechists. The works of the catechists consist in visiting Catholic families and providing regular catechesis both for the young and the old. They prepare the faithful for meaningful participation in the liturgy, and fruitful reception of the sacraments. They are the link between the faithful and the pastors, especially where it is difficult for the pastors to be always in contact with their flock in the far flung villages. Each Catechist has an average of 16 villages under his care. The Catechists also make new contacts with non-Christians who are interested in learning about Christianity and bring them in direct contact with the priest for follow-up action.
